In the play “Glass Menagerie” the characters possess traits of a social group because they include family members and friends who interact and share their live experiences. I the play, The “Glass Menagerie” by Williams, the social group is presented in a way that the characters the individual characters want to escape the reality by retreating into different social worlds. The Glass Menagerie Is described as a memory play because it is a story drawn from the author’s memory, Tom Wingfield. Therefore, being a story drawn from memory, the play is presented in a certain way that may not reflect the reality. The play is built on the power of memory and how the past occurrence can influence one’s present life.

Tom’s tendency of visiting the movie places is a symbol of escaping to the world of reality where he finds “a lot of adventure” (Williams pg. Laura’s glass menagerie, is a symbol used to represent a safe place where Laura hides her shyness from the natural world. The main idea in this play is memory versus reality. In this play, the social group is presented in such a way that outlines that the characters are living in denial. It is hard for them to forget about their past. In conclusion the entire play as presented by the narrator depicts a continuous struggle to escape the reality but all in vain. The social group here is presented as dwelling on the past and trying to deny their current live.
