Analysis Read through and analyze the organization’s operating budget. Using a critical approach, think about the following questions: What sources of revenue does the organization disclose? What information is provided on these revenue sources? What are the largest sources? The smallest? How is the organization spending its money? What amount is spent on people? Material? Programs? Other areas? When you look at percentages, what do you learn from the numbers? How complete is the information provided on revenue and expenses? Is the level of detail appropriate? Sufficient? Does the budget seem reasonable? Optimistic? Conservative? Does it seem to be based on hope or reality? Does the budget include information on previous years to allow for comparisons? What comparisons can you make based on the data? What changes do you see? Are they reasonable? Does the budget seem appropriate to the organization’s mission, history, goals, and population(s) served? You are on the right track if you find that you are citing specific examples from the budget in your essay, including examples of relative percentages of expenditures and revenues, and noting changes (and their impact) from one year to the next. Essay Content While you should introduce the organization by name and offer a brief description of its purpose, this assignment is intended to provide a critical review of the details of the budget with a clear focus on the numbers. It should identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas that might require further explanation. In addition to an effective introduction and conclusion, be sure that your essay includes the following: An overview of the organization’s revenue and expenses – what information is provided?
