Cubism traces its origins to Pablo Picasso’s painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon of 1907 (518). The painting represents five women: three Iberian on the left and two African-looking on the right, end, one standing over the other. The faces of the women, their body parts and even their clothing take geometrical shapes. The pronounced angular nature of the African women’s faces represents the African masks Picasso had studied from the artefacts shipped in from the French African colonies (517). While the art fraternity rejected Picasso’s work (due to the inclusion of African style), Braque was impressed (they later worked together) and took it up (518). It helped art lovers and artists broaden the message of artworks beyond the obvious representations in them.
