The law of conservation of linear momentum and energy can be done in an experiment of the inelastic collision. A perfect inelastic collision conserves both momentum and energy. MATERIALS/ APPARATUS Slotted plastic ruler Flat smooth surface Table 2 steel ball bearings of equal size and mass METHODS/ PROCEDURE Place the ruler on a shallow incline so that the top is propped on some solid surface (like a thick book) and the bottom of the incline is right at the edge of the table. Roll the ball down from the top inclined ruler. Measure the horizontal distance (d1) the ball travels before it was observed using two colliding ball of same size and mass. Although the experiment values were not exactly as the formula values from the equation the values were close and this suggested that the experiment was conducted well leading to the conservation of both energy and momentum. It has also been noted that majority of the collisions that happen in real life are inelastic collisions and cannot be experimented as the elastic collisions in the laboratory.
