Exploratory Essay

Exploratory Essay For this assignment: "Choose an research problem that genuinely perplexes you." Begin the essay by summarizing what got you interested in the topic, and then discuss alternate points of view that come from research. At some point in your discussion, be sure to discuss your interaction with—and reactions to—sources. • Include two images in the piece, along with captions explaining what each image is meant to convey and a citation to acknowledge the source. • Also, add some secondary research (facts/statistics, perhaps) and be sure to cite your sources at the end—you must include three SCHOLARLY sources (do not use popular sources). • Keep in mind that your purpose is to EXPLORE AND INFORM, NOT ARGUE. • An exploratory/informative essay allows the writer to examine different ideas about and perspectives of a topic before reaching a position, using the lens of scholarly sources not as evidence to support an argument, but as examples of the research that exists about the subject. • You must limit your use of the first person. ▪ Eliminate the following phrases from your writing: ▪ In my opinion ▪ Personally ▪ Me personally ▪ I believe ▪ I think ▪ I feel ▪ These phrases are unnecessary and greatly weaken your writing because they establish a personal context instead of an academic, objective context. Note: the instructor must approve of your topic in advance: avoid overdone topics such as abortion, lowering the drinking age, legalization of marijuana, etc., that are listed in the corresponding discussion) . The better topic is one that lends itself to a great deal of scholarly research, a topic associated with your major often works well. Furthermore, over-reliance on quotations from secondary sources can result in plagiarism/originality issues when using Turnitin. You must maintain a Similarity score of less than 20%. (Range: 4-8 pages; that is, 1,500-2,000 words.) The paper must be written using MLA style and include a Works Cited page. This list may expand to other topics as we go on. Try to think of fresh and intriguing topics that interest and engage you. You should consider current topics from within your major (NURSING) , or discipline, as this is an academic project. Make sure that the topic you choose lends itself to intellectual, scholarly work. Your "topic" should identify a perplexing problem, one that is suitable for scholarly engagement, not necessarily a 'hot button' or controversial issue. Try to think about your major field of study or discipline at the university as a starting point. (in my case my major is NURSING) There are a number of topics that have been so drastically overwritten that it's difficult to gain a fresh perspective, or they may not lend themselves to scholarly research and writing. Consequently, you will not be able to use the following popular topics on your work this semester. We may add to this list as we vet other topic ideas: Football/football-related Steroids/Steroid use/abuse Capital punishment Legalizing marijuana Online versus hybrid classes Gang violence Abortion Childhood obesity/Obesity-related
Vegetarianism
Video games/video game violence
Animal testing
Cell phone use/texting
Social media Below you will find the grading criteria, the rubric, for the essay, your essay must conform to MLA guidelines for format, citations, and Works Cited page. RUBRIC FOR EXPLORATORY ESSAY • Avoids use of the first and second person pronouns • Intriguing thesis or overarching main idea brings the question into focus and provides the right amount of new and interesting (or surprising) information about the question, and explores the topic thoroughly • Although bias/angle of vision/slant is acceptable in most informative essays, this essay is clearly designed with the rhetorical aim of EXPLORING as opposed to PERSUADING? Do not write an argument! • The article/essay is fully developed (1,500-2,000 words) • The quotes and facts from secondary sources are cited and integrated appropriately within the text (they do more than restate ideas already stated; they serve to illustrate various perspectives of the topic). • Uses at least three SCHOLARLY sources: peer-reviewed journal articles (no popular sources permitted). • Demonstrates dialectic thinking: thesis + antithesis = synthesis (black + white = grey) • Essay includes at least 2-3 well chosen, images with sources cited and captions that tell the reader what they show or teach us? Must be cited. Overall language, vocabulary, and handling of grammar/mechanics achieve university-level sophistication and correctness. You can access the following page for the 20 most common grammar errors, which also appear in your handbook, the Everyday Writer.
