Writing about Technology: Introduction

This assignment will assist the students in meeting Student Learning Outcome #1, 3, & 4. See Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) in the Getting Started module for more details. Always complete the weekly reading assignment and view the instructor's weekly slide show before beginning any writing assignment. Introduction An important component of learning about technology is writing about it. This assignment asks you to prepare a set of well-written paragraphs that answer questions posted about the materials made available to you and the results of your own online searches. Before beginning this assignment, be sure that you've read the posted materials on plagiarism posted in the Getting Started module. For all assignments this semester, a 0 grade will be assigned to any submitted work that contains material that has been plagiarized. TurnItIn, a plagiarizer-checker, will be used on all writing assignments beginning with Week Three. The Assignment Read/study the text and other materials provided to you in Week One and Week Two. Use additional online sources to assist you if necessary in answering the questions below. Do not, however, copy/paste from any online sources. If you do not have Word 2016, a free copy will be available soon. For this assignment, you may use any word processor of your choice as your submissioon is in a form that the instructor can open and read. For example, WordPad is just fine for now. Write a short paragraph answer for each of the following questions. Submit your answers in a Word document, labeled with the numbers of the questions. Answer in such a way that the reader knows what the question was. Alternatively, you may copy/paste the question and answer below it. Also separate each answer with a blank line between each for readability. Points will be deducted for misspelled words; lack of clarity; incomplete answers; and not following these instructions. Submit your document to this page on or before the due date. If you use external sources, such as the Internet, to assist in answering any of these questions, with your answers you must (!) include the URL(s) for the sites where you got the information. You do not need to use MLA format. However the URL links must be activated and ready for the instructor to check is she so wishes.. To activate a link in a document, type a space after you paste the link or type it in your paper. Be sure to answer the questions using your own words. Do not copy/paste any information from the Internet. The Questions. 1. The claim has been made that being able to use computers is fundamentally important living in an information-driven society such as ours. Is this claim true for both the workplace and the home? Support your answer. A yes/no answer is not enough. 2. Over the history of modern computing, different computer technologies have evolved. This course defines five generations of computers. a. Analyze each generation in terms of the size and speed of the technology used to build computers of that generation. Be sure to identify the technology used for generations 1-4. b. Explain why computers over time have become smaller, faster, more powerful, less expensive, and more efficient with respect to energy use. Notes re #2: See the Week Two resource for help on this. If you research the five generations you may find differences in how Generation 5 is described and titled. That's okay. 3. The Internet and the World Wide Web are related, but they are not the same thing. Explain what each is and how they are related to each other. 4. Data and information are related, but they are not the same thing. Differentiate between them. Then give a specific example of data and information that are related and explain that relationship. Do not use any examples that have been posted for you in Canvas or examples that may be in your textbook. 5. Scenario: Joe copies a file onto a USB flash drive (jump drive), goes to his uncle's house, plugs the USB flash drive into his uncle's computer, and copies a few files onto the flash drive; and then returns home and copies the files onto his hard drive. Explain why this is not an example of computer connectivity as defined in this course. (Hint: why does this scenario not satisfy the definition of computer connectivity?)
