Name Institutional Affiliation Professor’s Name Date Submitted “Cathedral” and “Sonny Blues” Comparison and Contrast The way an author portrays a given character in work is crucial in the determination of the role in general. In most cases characterization takes place due to first actions but it may change over the course of the story due to different occurrences take place. In the stories “Cathedral” and “Sony Blues ” the writers portray the characters in one way and change their opinion in the course of the stories and empathize with them. The transformation provides an excellent outlook on the events taking place in the stories. Both characters undergo a different change with regards to their roles and end up viewing life through their eyes. Cathedral revolves around three characters a wife Robert a blind man and the narrator who is the husband. Each has a different view of one another the narrator offered a helping hand and thus contributing to the success of Sonny’s music career. The change in the characters signifies a step towards acceptance in the long run. In comparing the two stories it is clear that the change given the initially evil characters provide a great perspective on life matters. In this case the stories teach the importance of giving people a chance and not to judge them by appearance or the first mistake. Through this it makes it possible to live long and established lives that are well developed. Both narrators are examples of accepting responsibilities and dealing with challenges that hinder the undertaking of the process. In a nutshell the development of the characters signifies better ways to embrace the differences that people have against one another. Work Cited Baldwin James. Sonny's blues. Order Description:

For Paper 1, students will compare and contrast two of the stories we've read so far this semester (either the hyperlinks or the four selections from the Norton introduction). These comparisons should hinge around similarities and differences in plot, character, or narration and point of view. For example, you might compare how the first-person perspective in both "Sonny's Blues" and "Cathedral" help develop the characters of Sonny and Robert, the blind man. Or, you might discuss how plot construction differs between "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?," which mostly takes place in an afternoon, and "The Lives of the Dead," which moves back and forth in time. There are virtually endless options here. For sources, you should employ direct quotes and paraphrases from both of the stories you address. Additionally, you should use a combination of direct quotes and paraphrases from the craft-discussion chapters hyperlinked on our Course Schedule. Do not bring in any additional texts--the purpose being I want you to bear down on the specifics of the texts we already have at our disposal. Your in-text citations must be in MLA format; but because all of your sources are coming from the Course Schedule, there is no works cited page necessary. Your paper should have a guiding thesis statement (a.k.a. a one-sentence central argument) at the end of your introduction paragraph. All of your paragraphs should then go toward arguing that thesis. Your paper should be 4-5 pages. We'll have a Discussion Board workshop during Week 6, and your participation in this workshop will comprise 15% of your total paper grade.
