Responding to a quote from Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations. STUDENT NAME: COURSE NAME: COURSE CODE: INSTRUCTORS NAME: INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATION: DATE SUBMITTED: It is not from benevolence of the butcher. The brewer or the baker that we expect our dinner but from their regard to their own self-interest. We address ourselves not to their humanity but their self-love and never talk to them of our own necessities but of their advantages. EXPLANATION In his book the Wealth of Nations Adam Smith tries to display much knowledge of human nature and that of how economy operates than to today’s supporters of free market. This quote can be seen as an affirmation of basic self-interest which is always viewed as an effective motive for economic activity. We will analyze this statement as an individual craftsman that is the butcher the brewer and the baker and then on how it is applied the provider gives humans something crucial to their lives and expects to earn a living by what he does. But the cultural expectation is that the driver is driven by something greater than mere need for money but the butcher and those of similar trades are driven solely by gain. This cultural expectations plays some role in fixing or creating motives in the minds of individual economic actors. If a driver tends to be shameful because he thinks his motives are based on gain in some situations he will work hard to clear this shame and better his motives by trying to service the community as well. And for the butcher if the society will continually tell him that he is driven by self-interest whatever nobble motive he had will be constrained under a single pursuit for gain.
