The continued increase of drug dosage makes the body of drug dependent people to malfunction in terms of producing important neurotransmitters. This makes the use of drugs to be self-medicating. Some chemicals in drugs usually interfere with the central nervous system and in turn, create the compulsion to use drug to restore well-being to a person. As a person develops tolerance to drugs, the failure to take drugs disrupts the homeostasis of the body and this leads to the development of withdrawal symptoms. Because drugs interfere with normal functioning of the brain by diminishing the supply of neurotransmitters, a person cannot just decide to withdraw because this will make the body deficient of the functions that drug use aid in the body.
