The mental condition is today looked upon with compassion as opposed to before, when mad men and women were treated as outcasts and often locked up and thus madness was rarely discussed by people. The path to madness is often an interesting one and full of intensity but also leaves many with a lot of questions as to how the person gets to full-blown madness. Edgar Allan Poe rides on this suspenseful process to build a background for his poem and in the process richly uses imagery to make sense to his audience (Poe). Poe richly employs visual imagery in the entire poem as he attempts to paint a mental image of what transpires on this night of December. Visual imagery is the use of words that push the readers to a world of fantasy where they try to draw images of what is described in the poem and live the moment.
