The American Promise and Fulfillment of the Promise from the Ratification of the Constitution through Reconstruction
The Reconstruction period, being the period following the end of the Civil War, involved a period of great effort, energy and dedication among the country’s leaders towards restoring the country to where it was before the war. The goas did not stop there. The government channeled great effort and resources into the rebuilding era to make the United States prosperous in terms of economy, social and political status, the South was the main target of the Reconstruction period as it was the most affected by war. Starting with President Abraham Lincoln, the Reconstruction era largely fulfilled the American Promise in various ways. Some of the achievements of the Reconstruction period in realizing the American promise included the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, the 14th Amendment, 15th Amendment, Giving African Americans equal rights to vote and election into political office, and development of new state constitutions.
