Additionally, her father and elder brother abused her physically making her feel deserted and unloved. When she was in middle school, Miss C was bullied by both her teachers and classmates because her father happened to be the school’s Dean of Students. The lack of harmony and love between her parents and grandparents made little Miss C question the nature of relationships. All she wanted was to leave home and get married someday. Sadly, the marriage ended in not only divorce but also a broken heart. Thus, her behavior can be regarded as a defense mechanism to the traumatic events she experienced in her childhood. Reaction formation is another defense mechanism. The concept entails converting an impulse that is socially unacceptable into its opposite (Baumeister, Dale & Sommer, 1998).
