Western Civilization before the 30 years war week 4 student

Respond to Jeremy-------Hello class, The term "Dark Ages" is somewhat misleading; Many a dark thing took place during this time, but it was not entirely bleak.  The fall of Roman Civilization left a massive power vacuum that was filled by the Germanic Kingdoms. These Germanic Kingdoms were in a sense, "uncivilized" because they were continually warring among one another and did not have any central laws. Although the Roman style of civilization fell into disarray for many years, there was a religion on the rise that would change everything; Christianity. Christianity was not new to the western world at the beginning of the Middle Ages, but it was in a state of disarray much like the warring German Kingdoms. As Christianities popularity grew, Monasteries formed and became bastions of learning, saving the great works of Rome and Greece from being destroyed. Christianity formed the backbone of the Middle Ages, dividing and re-joining kingdoms based on different interpretations of the scriptures. While Christianity did bring division, it became the dominant religion of the times and formed much of the Western World. The Carolingian Renaissance tried to bring back the idea of education for the masses, but this failed due to lack of resources and the sentiment of the times. While much of this does sound "dark," civilizations rose and fell, and atrocities were committed; we have men like Charlemagne and Alfred the Great who shone bright and made real differences that shaped the Western World as we know it. Although I do not think the term "Dark Ages" is offensive, I do believe that Middle Ages is a much more accurate term.  Jeremy C. Pavlac B. A Concise Survey Of Western Civilization: Supremacies And Diversities Throughout History [e-book]. Lanham: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers; 2015. Available from: eBook Collection (EBSCOhost), Ipswich, MA. Accessed January 27, 2018.---------------------------------- Respond to Dania----------Feudalism (feuds or vendettas taken up by one party against another), which is derived from the term feud saw its rise in the early middle ages after the fall of Roman governance and its subsequently their law courts, by the Germanic/Gothic tribes to the north. As a result of these tribes, who did not understand nor appreciate the role or practicality of the Roman courts nor for the concept of lawyers, (Pavlac, p129) brought with them their own systems of governance and beliefs that differed dramatically from the Romans. Their belief in loyalty to kinship and to the clan, meant that differences were not settled in the “docile” Roman fashion, with courts and lawyers but instead by the individual tribe or clan. In some cases they would resort to trials by fire. This meant that differences would often lead lead to feuds or vendettas among these various people and tribes. Looking at the history from this point of view feudalism can be seen as an appropriate descriptive term for discussing the early middle ages. Additionally, I believe that language and the use of the same is as much a part of history as the events that occurred. Changing the terms that we used to use to describe history or periods of time in order to satisfy our modern needs seems to me like a loss of history in itself. Some words have lost their meaning, while others have gained new meanings. Resolving the issue is as simple as stating this is the term use to describe “x” and so on. References Pavlac, Brian Alexander. A Concise Survey of Western Civilization: Supremacies and Diversities throughout History. Second edition, Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2015. A Concise Survey of Western Civilization--------------------------- Respond to Penny-------Charlemagne was considered holy because he was devoted to the Pope. There were numerous times that the Pope came to him for help when other people invaded the Papal lands in Rome. He was Roman because he became a figure who as out text states “tried to revive the Roman Empire and its civilization.” (Pavlac, 2015) I believe that he fit both of these descriptions. He was devoted to the Pope and his faith. This made him holy. He put his faith and religion above anything else. His values were based on faith alone and that faith pushed his ambitions even more. He also continued to force his religion on others such as the Saxons and Danes. If they did not convert to the Christian faith then they were killed. I don’t think that this made him holy. In one sense holy means devoting oneself to faith and religion and the bible states to not kill. On the other hand holy can mean that he believed greatly in his faith which he did. On the aspect of Roman then I would have to say that without a doubt he was Roman. Although he was not born in Rome or raised there, he tried to bring back the Roman way of living. Just because he was not raised there does not mean he cannot become Roman. It is the same now in the United States. Citizenship can be gained to become American. References Pavlac, B.A. (2015).
