Student’s Name Course Professor’s Name Date Essay 1 To Build a Fire The story “To Build a Fire” by Jack London depicts the experiences of a naive new comer to the Yukon territory who ventures into the cold during a severe winter season despite receiving warnings about the dangers that lurk in the cold nights. The victim in the story attempts to cross the Yukon Territory to meet his friends in another camp in an environment whose temperature had dropped to −59 °C. The unnamed character is very determined to make it across the vast territory and arrive with his wolf dog by noon to rejoin with his friends. However he is met with numerous complications and problems that cannot allow him to cross the territory but at this time there was no way to turn back; “That showed one must not be too sure of things” (70). The tension also increase when he fails to light a fire to keep himself warm and the reader is kept wondering whether he will survive the harsh conditions in the cold; “His feet must be badly frozen by now and there would be some time before the second fire was ready” (73). To the reader the story is a lesson learn not to take any action without first analyzing its impacts.
