There are two distinct types of elephantiasis, and they include the filarial elephantiasis and the non-filarial elephantiasis (VOA News, 2009). In the filarial elephantiasis, the lymphatic filariasis occurs the instance that the parasitic worm that causes the condition enters the lymphatic system within the body. This worm is known as nematode and is carried by certain mosquitos. In this form or type of the disease, the larva that is let within the body of an individual can take up to seven years to develop. On the other hand, the non-filarial elephantiasis, which is prevalent in Africa and other tropical regions, occurs when an individual is exposed to irritant soil. In conclusion, there are preventive measures that one can take to prevent from contracting the disease.
