It has not only created grotesque, but disgruntlement among the consumers. It not only poise as a challenge to humanity but the entire living organisms on a global scale. Food acts a great source of energy that makes people to drive the economy. The inadequacy of this precious commodity greatly impacts on the general output of people in their daily chores. When making an evaluation of the food that humans consume, it is important to consider the food cycle that exists in the universe. In order to maintain and remain fit, the population is now considerate on the quantities and types of food that they consume. In the traditional society, there was over-reliance on one type of food by the people.

Consumption of corn was the norm of the day across the globe. However, the evolutionary changes that have occurred have diversified the food in the modern society. At the present, technological changes and the innovations have shaped the food that is consumed ranging from the traditional foods to fast foods. The changes that have occurred over time have resulted in the change in the loss of the original edible products that were used in the past. In one of the quotes of Pollan, he advises people not to “eat foods that were not recognized by grandmothers” (Pollan, 80). Through such sentiments, one can easily depict the changes that have taken place. Based on the works, he advocates for organic farming, where he views it to be the solution to food security.

As part of the dilemma that faces human today, there should be need to promote organic farming at the expense of the modernized synthetic production. Cost and subsidies Dilemma The efforts that governments have incorporated to ensure food production according to Pollan's have resulted in different alternatives in the food choices (Pollan, 63). Since there is the presence of subsidies, people are able to produce different kinds of food. Pollan asserts that there is a great need to cater for the costs variable involved in the food production and consumption (Pollan, 68). There are costs incurred through the general production of foods. Despite the costs being used to the increased food supply, there is great need to adjust the prices and even more costs incurred in the transport of goods from one place to another (Pollan, 65).

Instead, the choice of food is determined by your financial capability, preference as well as the type of food among other factors. Environmental Dilemma The food dilemma expands to the realm of greenhouse gas effects. A man contemplates the need to acquire a cheap food source while compromising the integrity of the environment. As man attempts to satisfy his food needs, he destroys the environment in which he sources his food from. The industrialized foods are deemed to be a major contributor to the greenhouse effects which, poise a challenge too humanity. The technology incorporated is driven by fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have led to global warming as they interfere with the atmospheric functions leading to penetration of harmful gases on to the earth surface.

The machinery used to produce adequate food for the animals and transport the final product to the market affects the environment. Given that industrial producers dominate the marketplace, the carbon footprint is immense. Corn is identified as an integral part of the omnivore food chain. The man has to try and select his foods based on the impacts they have on the environment. The option might seem straightforward but it is challenging when the information on the food source is limited or compromised. The major food producer through questionable advertisement tends to portray their foods as healthy and environmentally friendly. The concept of organic food is not as that which is normally considered by the consumers. Some organic chicken in the market is not as free-ranging as the consumers are guided to believe.

However, the quantity of food produced is integral in feeding the growing masses. The advocacy for organic and localized food production is aimed at improving the food quality consumed by man. The localized production is noble but is likely to be inefficient in producing the food quantities churned by the industrial system. At the moment, the world is having an immense population growth and the adequacy of food production have become a global concern (Grafton, Daugbjerg, and Qureshi, 179). Most societies are starving due to the in availability of food that can sustain them efficiently. The approach is clearly more environmentally friendly and assures good quality food. The quality of food is enhanced due to the minimized use of artificial inputs. The industrial production of food is not focused on quality but quantity.

The foods produced at the industrial levels use a lot of artificial inputs which compromise the quality of the foods. The industrial production, however, creates a larger variety of food and produces a larger quantity. The technological advancement has increased food production and has enabled the preservation and transportation of food hence, reducing massive food wastage on global scale. However, despite all these efforts, food availability and sustainability has proved to be insufficient to feeding the entire population on a global scale. Pollan and others have argued that it is necessary for man to question the food sources so as to help with the food dilemma. The environmental impact and the health effects of the food consumed are essential aspects in considering the foods to consume.
