Other - Rough Draft, Essay

Please develop a rough draft of Essay 1 using the Guidelines below. Then, please submit your essay to Canvas using a Word doc or pdf as an attachment. Recall that the introduction should capture a scene with sensory detail, the thesis should be clear in the first couple of paragraphs, and research requirements should be met for incorporating direct quotes into your material. Also recall the alternating format that we discussed in class: Intro (par 1), Researched paragraph (par 2), My own experience (par 3), Researched paragraph (par 4)... So on and so forth. This is just ONE idea of how you can blend your own ideas and background into the research. Essay 1 Guidelines ENG 102 Personal Essay: How has an event changed me in a teachable way? Please make sure your essay adheres in these ways: -- You state an event that has changed you in an irrevocable way -- From this event, you will choose concepts that can be RESEARCHED -- 3.5 - 4 pages in length -- 3 quotes using researched viewpoints for supporting your own ideas (using MLA and in-text citations) -- Works Cited section after essay -- Essay must start with an in-the-moment scene using narrative description -- Essay must have an introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion For this first essay, we’ll be telling HOW an event CHANGED us in an unforgettable way. Please include how your experience can help others learn something of value. It might be helpful to structure some of your sections using these questions: --Significance: Why is this researchable topic significant in society, or important to consider? --Time period: What is significant about THIS period of your life when you encountered the change? --Change: What types of changes did you undergo? How are you different now? How has this change shaped who you are today? --Researchable concepts: What are the most important ideas for me to support in my research? --Teachable: What can others learn about my experiences? ---- Here's an example of how an essay can work: Films can change us. Even when we’re young. Perhaps, especially when we are young. When I was a child, my father used to take me to movies. It didn’t matter what type of films I saw, but I always loved to go. Despite my young age (as little as 4!), he even would sometimes take me to R-rated films. My favorite thing was to sit on his lap. I remember one time when I was watching some explicit film called, “Prince of the City.” I couldn’t understand the ideas, or what was happening in the narrative. One particular time, I must have been about 4 or 5. I sat cuddled into my dad’s lap, and clasped my small, long-fingered hands around his neck. I whispered into his ear, “what is that man doing?” And, “what’s happening now?” He answered my inquiries, yet I don’t recall what he said. I only recall feeling happy. Peaceful. So pleased to be in that huge theatre with my dad, watching content that was too mature for me. It can be said that going to that film changed me, in a way. It helped to mold my passion for film. It helped me to want to explore the world of writing and film as an art form, and then to teach related concepts to others. It can be said that some of the strongest positive memories of our parents are the ones that help make us into who we become. Thesis: It can be said that some of the strongest positive memories of our parents are the ones that help make us into who we become. Researchable concept #1: How memories impact us from youth (Look up psychologists’ views on this) Researchable concept #2: The role of fathers in a young child’s life (Look up psychologists’ or anthropologists’ views on this) Researchable concept #3: The impacts of watching film (Look up filmmakers’ views on this, media professionals, psychologists, teachers, parents)
