Should Healthcare Plans Cover Naturopathic Remedies
Document Type:Research Paper

Some of the insurance companies fail to cover for naturopathic because they do not accurately define what type of physicians a client should visit. This article discusses some of the reasons why all insurance companies should cover for naturopathic health remedies. Firstly, there are special groups of health practitioners who remain trained and qualified as naturopathic doctors. These professionals go through training which equips them knowledge on how to take care of their patients. They can fill in the gap of primary care physicians. The client should enjoy the freedom of choosing their doctors and get the right cover. The non-discrimination clause of the ACA states that insurance companies “ shall not discriminate with respect to participation under the plan or coverage against any health care provider who is acting within the scope of that provider's license under applicable state law” (Miller 23-37).
Additionally, the Affordable Care Act is aimed at promoting preventive care. Naturopathic physicians focus on preventing diseases by considering the risks factors associated, susceptibility to the disease and collaborating with the patient to prevent the reoccurrence of the disease. Therefore, the insurance companies should cover the efforts of naturopathic physicians to prevent diseases. Of course, with the right scientific back up this argument can be proven true. The study of medicine also provides the immunity system, which defends the body. If diseases can be healed with less invasion and low exposure to chemicals, then insurance companies should give this type of treatment a chance to help their patient clients. Some treatments that are already covered by most insurance companies merely suppress the symptoms of diseases.
