Rationale of Import substitution Strategy and Export Promotion Strategy in Developing Countries

Assessment Scheme: This coursework carries 50% (or 40% for resit of In-class-Test) of the total assessment; it requires around 2500 words (inclusive). This work is expected to be in an essay-style and has to be completed individually. 2 The Topic of the Coursework: Rationale of Import substitution Strategy and Export Promotion Strategy in Developing Countries (with reference to specific types of commodities exported by some specific developing countries) • The case(s) must be specific and the title needs to be specific and narrowed by students according to the cases one chosen. • Students are expected to understand international trade in general and to show some in-depth knowledge of the issue under discussion in particular. • Under the guidance of the supervisor(s), each student will provide a literature review in the field, search and prepare a bibliography / references of the subject, provide abstracts of each relevant article or book, summarise your abstract, make reports on your research progress in class. • Students may be asked to make an oral presentation of their own individual coursework in some specific cases. • The required style of the coursework will be formal. 3 Pass grade: The pass grade is 16. 4 Deadlines for submission The deadline for this essay is 12 August 2016. Submit a e-copy Turnitin, and submit a har copy to the UniHelp desk. Late submissions will not be accepted or will be penalized.. 5 Requirements: 1) The coursework must be your own work and in your own words. Avoid plagiarism and copying from a colleague. When utilising books and journal articles, you must make sure that you reference the authors correctly. Failure to do this will be penalised. Students are advised to note the University’s regulations in section F of the University courses handbook, on ‘The infringement of University Regulations’, as these regulations will be enforced. 2) The coursework must follow academic convention and style (full Harvard referencing, appropriate in-text citations etc.) The assessment board will objectively reward those students who at least try to follow the rules and penalise those that do not. 3) The coursework must be word-processed, 1.5 spaced with 12 font, with a cover page. The cover page should show the title of coursework, module code, student’s name, student’s ID, words count, and submission date precisely. 6 Quality Requirement: The course work and the research project will be graded with reference to certain criteria, which include: • an ability to show an understanding of the issues • clear demonstration of an understand of the relevant body of literature • an ability to use the correct theoretical and applied material to make arguments • an ability to make linkages with other topics covered in the module i.e. not answering the question in isolation • utilising your research into a logical and coherent answer • insights provided by your work Therefore, a work that receives a distinction would show an appreciation and understanding of a wide array of literature and use it in an applied manner. It would cover most important aspects of the issue in a coherent and logical way and have no significant mistakes. Merit would show the above characteristics but would fail to cover the important aspects of the issue have some minor mistakes and would fail to utilise as broad a literature base. To gain either of these grades, students should show more than blind regurgitation, utilising the relevant theories presented in the literature to give a clear precise answer. A pass at this level will show an understanding of the issue, but will have omissions and some errors. It will not use or apply the theories as thoroughly but it will still show that the student can utilise the relevant material to analyse the problems. A fail will show a misunderstanding of the concepts presented in the module and fail to provide adequate analysis and discussion of the issue with the relevant theories from the literature. Badly structured and poorly written answers will be penalised. Marking schemes 1) Introduction: describe the background and problems, the issues, as well as state clearly the objectives of the research. [10%] 2) Literature review (including Methodology and data used): give a brief view of the literature in the field, of method / approach, and of its applicability and limitation. [30%] 3) Analysis, Arguments and discussion. [35%] 4) Conclusions. [10%] 5) References (full Harvard style). [10%] 6) Presentation [5%] Penalty schemes will be applied on: 1) Plagiarism; [From 10% up to code U] 2) Inappropriately use of references; [Up to 10%] 3) Poor presentation; [Up to 10%] 4) Poor structure. [Up to 10%] A Suggested Structure for the Coursework The report should be well-structured and well-presented. As required by the module, the report is expected to be research-based with some academic merits. I strongly suggest you to collect your own data, and to use those data in your research (since data collection and data handling are very important parts of research), that will give your work extra credit points. In the case that you cannot obtain suitable or enough data, you may use the data provided in the classes. In any circumstances, you should always put your analysis and interpretation in the business decision-making context. 1. Cover page (module title, module code, submission date, student name, and word count) 2. List of Contents (suggested) 3. Abstract (100 words) 4. Introduction: describe the background and problems, the issues, as well as state clearly the objectives of the research 5. Literature review (including Methodology and data used): give a brief view of the literature in the field, of method / approach, and of its applicability and limitation. 6. Analysis Process (follow the procedure step by step) and Discussion 7. Conclusions 8. References (Harvard style) For the general requirements: refer to the Module Handbook.
