Proposal Assignment

1000 Word Minimum (Be aware that you may have to write more to full develop the document) The Assignment: Choose one of the following options below: Proposal Assignment: Option 1 Proposal Assignment: Option 2 Proposals usually have the following characteristics: Introduction and Summary Background information proving a specific problem exists. (Very important!) Propose a solution and discuss benefits. Describe the work to be done. Create work schedule. Proposal should have an itemized cost breakdown. Should include qualifications of person or company doing the work. A concluding paragraph. Every proposal is different, so you might not follow the above to the letter. Be sure to review my notes in the learning module. Be sure to document any research sources using MLA format. There are two options to choose from AND I WILL SEND SAMPLE PAPER TO YOU OPTION 1 The Assignment: If you choose this option, you will identify a problem or area of possible improvement on the College of the Mainland Campus and then propose a solution. You will research and attempt to develop a solution or suggest an improvement. This assignment will, of course, expose you more thoroughly to the genre of the proposal. In addition to learning proposal superstructures and conventions, we’ll work on creating a more cohesive, coherent arrangement and style. Chapter 16 of your textbook will have guidelines for format and content. I would like you to keep in mind the following:  You will need to prove that the problem does exist with evidence.  You will need to think about all of the alternatives for solving the problem.  Then, your document will propose what you consider to be the feasible solution and offer evidence to support that choice.  The proposal will then describe how to implement the solution. Be sure to choose a topic that is fairly simple. Proposing the construction of a new building requires information on choosing the land, permits, contractors, and on and on and on. A topic like this would be too complicated. Research Sources: You will prepare a works cited page of outside resources. These can include books, journal or periodical articles, individual interviews for the project, web sources, etc. You must have at least two (2) research sources, and they must be cited using MLA or APA format. Topic Considerations: You should use the following questions or similar ones to guide your inquiry:  What’s a problem at College of the Mainland that concerns me?  Is this a problem for someone else, and if so, how?  What do I think needs to be done to solve it?  What types of solutions have already been proposed by others? What have their experiences investigating the problem taught them that I may not know?  What group (or groups) would benefit from my getting involved? (i.e. determine who the stakeholders are)  Who has the power to enact the change I am proposing? What are their primary concerns? OPTION 2 The Assignment: Option 2 If you choose this option, you will identify a problem—in this case a task (from your job, course work, daily life) and then propose a solution. Your problem may be real or hypothetical. You might create a hypothetical problem based on your recommendation report. This assignment will, of course, expose you more thoroughly to the genre of the proposal. Typical Scenarios for the Proposal: This option is based on a hypothetical problem which you must create, a scenario. If you’re unsure as to what to write about here are some suggestions: * Imagine that a company has some sort of problem or wants to make some sort of improvement. It sends out a request for proposals; you receive one and respond with a proposal. You offer to come in, investigate, interview, make recommendations--and present it all in the form of a proposal. * Some agency has just started using a fancy desktop-publishing system, but the documentation is giving people fits. You receive a request for proposals from this agency to write some sort of simplified guide or startup guide. Brainstorming: Below are some questions designed to help you compose a workable scenario as you answer the questions: 1. What project(s) have you done for work or for classes in your major which meet the following criteria: you carried out experimental research or developed a product; you gathered data on your own; you reached a conclusion; you wrote a document (however brief) about your data and gave your conclusion. 2. Of these projects, which one(s) did you understand the best and feel most confident about the information which you gathered? 3. Of these projects, which one(s) involve the kind of research which you might actually do out in the field once you have gained your degree? 4. Select one project which meets these criteria: you have raw data available to you; you understand the data well; a company might actually employ you to gather and analyze such data or design such a product.
