Pros and Cons of Genetically Modified Food Bailey Parker 22339400 University Genetic modification is a technical application used to extract one desired gene from an organism and transfer it into another thus recreating its biological information; DNA. These transfer methods are used to introduce desirable traits or favorable characteristics into micro-organisms plants and animals. The products obtained from these technologies are commonly called genetically modified organisms or GMOs (Scottish Government 2011; Health Research Funding 2013). Controversial debate surrounding genetic engineering is spread throughout many countries. According to Scottish Government (2011) there are some theories claiming benefits of recombinant-DNA technologies (Scottish Government 2011) include : Increased crop production with less pesticide usage (The Debate 2017) ; more sustainable crops to grow in less favorable environmental conditions (Genetic Science Learning Center 2013); Increased nutritional value and disease fighting properties accommodating beneficial human health therapies (Genetic Science Learning Center 2013). Opposing theories buy it. That’s why there still are no labels in America. Profit over ethics money over people’s health killing us slowly one bowl of cereal at a time.
