Literature and Film screenplay assignment

Assignment 2: Adaptation to Screenplay Format Objective: To teach analysis of a work and to introduce screenplay format Parameters: Choose a pivotal section of a short story, novel, or play that has not been made into a film. Write a 10-15 page screenplay adaptation of that section. Guidance: Follow the sample screenplays I have posted Students will convert a scene from a classic short story, novel, or play into a shooting script. Try, if possible, to find something that is not currently a film. If you do choose something that is already a film, your adaptation should be significantly different from what has been done before. Have fun with this. A screenplay should be in a specific format (see the examples below). I will grade you based on the following: a) Follow the official formatting (see web examples below) b) Stress dialogue c) Use short scenes d) Avoid narration e) Avoid prose descriptions f) Bring the scene to action g) Formatting, formatting, formatting Screenplay Samples: http://jeffreyleewoods.com/Screenplay_scene.html http://www.filmschooldirect.com/sample_lessons/sample_lesson_format.htm http://www.scriptologist.com/Magazine/Formatting/formatting.html Oscar-winning screenplays (you may look at the screenplay as you watch a scene online) http://www.simplyscripts.com/oscar_winners.html Free Scriptwriting Software (rather than using Word, this is very helpful, and it’s free. If you use this software, you will instantly have the correct formatting. http://celtx.com/ Students must make a note: this screenplay is a class assignment. Several of the approved short stories (marked with asterisks) are not in the public domain, and therefore actual films/projects based on those works would require the approval of the author or author’s agent. Suggested Short Stories You may choose something that is not on this list The Snows of Kilimanjaro (Hemingway) The Rocking Horse Winner (Lawrence) Araby (Joyce) The Storm (Chopin) Chrysanthemums (Steinbeck) The Yellow Wallpaper (Gilman) The Necklace (Maupassant) Gimpel the Fool (Singer) The Telltale Heart (Poe) A Cask of Amontillado (Poe) Bartleby the Scrivener (Melville) Young Goodman Brown (Hawthorne) Repent Harlequin, Said the Tick-tock Man (Ellison) * Sonny’s Blues (Baldwin) * The Rooftop Dwellers (Desai) * The Pugilist at Rest (Jones) * The Killers (Dubos) * Saboteur (Jin) * Interpreter of Maladies (Lahiri) * Everyday Use (Walker) * Harrison Bergeron (Vonnegut) * A Good Man is Hard to Find (O’Connor) * The Judge’s Wife (Isabel Allende)* A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings (Marquez)* *Denotes this story is not in the public domain Screenplay Rubric Format 50% • Correct placement of names, scenes, descriptions, dialogue, etc. I’m paying the most attention to form on this assignment. Do not worry about sticking strictly to the story. Make it your own. Use of description 25% • Descriptions should be specific, but they are not prosaic. Do not take sections of the short story out of the text or use them out of context. Study scripts and see what is in the descriptive section; it should specifically describe either an object or an action • Do not give me background from the written text. For instance, do not tell me “Emile comes from a poor family, and just last week she repaired a hole in her sock.” • Show, don’t tell Use of outstanding dialogue 25% • Show, don’t tell. People don’t speak in giant, long speeches (unless they’re teachers). They speak in sentences that go about three or four lines at most.
