Through this, he is able to show his depth of knowledge on the founding principles upon which the nation was created. Lincoln also makes use of ethos when he says that, “government of the people, by the people for the people,” thereby alluding to the preamble of the constitution (The Gettysburg Address). Logos Abraham Lincoln uses the appeal to logic/reason to convince his audience. Lincoln states that, “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. ” In this statement Lincoln cites the historical facts on the civil war and uses them to question the need to continue with the war. These are powerful tools that can be used by speakers to pass important messages to their audiences in the most effective way.
