According to Roman mythology, the rise of the Roman Empire was due to the story of Romulus and his twin Remus. This account of Rome’s origin is still relevant even today and despite the different interpretations used by various scholars like Livy, Plutarch, and Virgil. Thus, despite these dissimilarities, all three accounts manage to state that the origin story of Rome manages to explain the principles and ideologies of the Roman people even in modern times. The thesis statement for this paper is that Livy, Plutarch, and Virgil in their own ways manage to present the importance and relevance of Romulus to the origin of Rome and the Roman people. The Roman identity where outsiders were not allowed and the community could fight to protect their city came from the tale of Romulus.

This characteristic of the Roman people subsequently resulted to an advanced political system. Romulus is considered to have created a system for rules and policies which governed the people of the city with the help of his successor, Numa (Plutarch, 1952, 62). The evidence is found in Plutarch’s story called “The Life of Romulus” creates the philosophical nature of most Roman leaders from history such as Plato. Plutarch’s recount of the myth follows a similar approach to Livy’s narration. However, Plutarch deviates slightly from the same story by describing the successor of Romulus called Numa and he was a devout and recluse person (Plutarch, 1952, 64). Additionally, the formation of Italy according to Virgil’s story created the bloodline for the Romans since Romulus and Remus who became the initial founders of Rome as a city were related to Aeneas.
