Some of them decided to free the children of the slaves; allowing them to receive education. The wave of emancipation caused a lot of controversy with slave owners not agreeing to the new call for absolute freedom to the slaves. However, the abolitionists disagreed arguing instead that freedom would improve standard of living for the slaves and allow them a chance to education. Although there was no outright rebellion as was witnessed in Brazil and West Indies, the “most widespread expression of hostility to slavery was “day-to-day resistance” or “silent sabotage”—doing poor work, breaking tools, abusing animals, and in other ways disrupting the plantation routine” (Foner 443). After the number of revolts became a common feature in the south, the number of abolitionists increased and became more vocal in the fight against slavery.
