They reduce the inequality by bargaining for the increase of the wages of low and the middle-wage workers, blue color workers, then for the high-income earners and the white color job workers (Milner, 2015). Besides, unions play the role of setting a pay standard which the nonunion workers follow to pay their employees. Finally, unions play the role of amplifying the voices of working people in the workplace. The roles of management and unions have changed over the past one hundred years. The role of labor unions has changed due to the wartime. The first current trend is the occupational shift where nowadays labor unions have shifted to more occupations. The other current trend is the corporate campaigning. Corporate campaigning is a newly developed to compel employees that workforce should be unionized (Wolfinger, 2017).

Besides, there have been current trends in declining membership. The decline in membership has been mostly in the private sector. Employees rely on union members to represent them in negotiating on working conditions. Once the agreement is reached the collective bargaining agreement is reached. Not all employees are members of the labor unions (Rusell, 2017). Labor unions ensure that employees do not engage in unfair labor practices. During the negotiation, the employees must practice the good faith bargaining process. The second leadership competency is the problem-solving approach in which the people negotiating are expected to emphasize the interest of the parties rather than emphasizing on the positions they hold. In addition, the parties are expected to encourage positive relationships even after a disagreement (Wolfinger, 2017).
