The Orem’s self-care deficit theory comprises of three components; self-care, self-care deficit and the nursing systems. Self-care theorizes that individuals are able to perform activities on their own to maintain healthy daily life. In self-care deficit, illness or injury limits the ability of individuals to meet all their daily needs of living. In self-care deficit, the individual requires assistance by the nurse to be able to meet those needs. The nursing system indicates the level at which the nursing care assistance is offered to the patient and can be either total compensation, partial or supportive-educative compensation. The HBM is limited in that the models assume there is an equal access and understanding of health information in a community and also ignores habitual behaviors that are done not for health reasons but majorly for social acceptability.

The assumption of equal access and understanding of health knowledge in a community deprives the individualized approach to promoting cues to action in a community which may lead to disparities in access to health or adoption of healthy behaviors in a community. The two theories can be integrated into the assessment, development of nursing diagnosis and development of nursing interventions in achieving health at the community level. Integrating the theories to nursing process provides a systematic manner of integrating the theories to practice. At the primary level of prevention, the HBM can be utilized to promote behavior change which can them prevent the occurrence of illness or disease. , & Askari, A.
