His election as the president of the United States of America in August 2016 came as fairly a surprise to many American citizens considering the opinion polls’ prediction of Clinton’s victory. As a tradition for the United States of America’s democracy, there is an organized president-elect victory speech that is largely covered by media. However, unlike his predecessors whose victory speeches depicted authority, power and the true character of the presidency, Trump’s victory speech was much different. This essay critiques the vital aspects pointed out in his victory speech on November 9, 2016. Key themes from the speech Introductory statement In his speech, Donald Trump adopted a plain introductory statement. In His victory speech, for instance, Obama remarked “…I just received a very gracious call from Senator McCain”.

Trump further acknowledges the efforts of his main opponent by stating “Hillary [Clinton] worked very long and very hard over a long period of time…” It can be pointed out clearly that this statement also forms part of the tradition in victory speeches as his former predecessor Obama in his speech alluded to the same fact by stating “…he [McCain] fought long and hard in this campaign…” Recognition of family and key allies Although Trump recognized his close friends towards the middle of his speech, he endeavored to mention his key allies and even called them to the stage. Unlike his predecessors who recognized their family and close allies just after the introductory remarks, Trump goes ahead to talk about his plans for the country before ushering his friends.

This he perhaps did it to maintain his Showman character. In his speech, Trump says “first I want to thank my parents…. Although much of his plan is a repeat of the plans former presidents laid out during their speeches, he nonetheless emphatically talks about it. He states “we are going to fix our inner cities, and rebuild our highways, bridges, tunnels, airports, schools, hospitals…” However, much of Trump’s plan for the country as depicted in his speech is about infrastructural development, economic growth, peace, and stability. These themes run through the speeches of former presidents America has had before Trump. Recognition of security It is quite interesting to note that while the former presidents had similar speeches before, nothing much was said about the security service of the country.

Obama, for instance in his speech made little reference to the security service and departments of the country. I love this country… thank you” There are a couple of things that run through the speech of Donald Trump. First, reading through Trump’s speech, there is disorganization in the flow of the speech from one topic to the other. The president’s before him always had their speeches following a particular pattern but this is not the case with that of Trump. For instance, Obama’s speech begins by introductory remarks, appreciation of friends, family, campaign team and his deputy elect, the outline of a plan for the country and concluding remarks. Trump’s speech has an introduction, outline of a plan for the country, appreciation of family and friends, back to the outline of a plan for the country and conclusion.
