Analysis a hindu art

Final interpretive exercise: Reading a work of ancient Indian art, (3-5 double spaced pages, due to be submitted in hard copy on the date listed on the schedule below). Step 1. Select a traditional Indian sculpture or painting for close examination (musical, modernist and literary arts, even if they are from South Asia, are not suitable for this exercise). Choose one that, in your estimation, best embodies the values of the tradition. This is most easily accomplished by selecting a famous, well known work of ancient Indian art rather than a quirky, marginal or modern one. Step 2. Interpret the significance of your selection in relation to the following five imaginary “reading positions”: Three imagined insiders’ perspectives: The youth/student (brahmacharya, literally “celibate”) stage of life. The adult, “householder”, (grihastha) stage of life. The final two stages of retirement (vanaprastha, “forest dweller”) and renunciation (sannyasa, renouncer). Two imagined outsiders’ perspectives: The critical perspective of a hostile, outside observer. The critical perspective of a sympathetic outside observer. Divide your essay into five clearly marked paragraphs, or sub-sections, in which each of these viewpoints is examined explicitly. It will obviously be necessary to entertain all five of these perspectives within your own imagination, since you obviously cannot literally occupy all of them yourself. The first three refer to the classical South Asian model of dharma, in which the person unfolds, like a lotus, as s/he grows through four stages of life. For these it will be necessary to cite evidence from the lectures, course readings and credible outside sources. The final two points of view will be based on your own experience living in contemporary American culture. It will become clear through the course readings that this exercise is not intended to uncover the supposedly “true” meanings (of insiders, or of an author’s intention) and the “false” meanings (of outsiders, or the reader’s subjective opinions). Just as a building looks different from the inside than from the outside, the same cultural phenomena also appear differently from different vantage points, or “reading positions”. Furthermore, in today’s globalizing world the distinctions of “insiders” and “outsiders” is increasingly blurred by mass communications, travel, immigration, language learning, mixed ethnicities, cross-cultural research and education. Indeed, the ultimate objective of the design of this exercise—and of the course as a whole--course is to participate in the blurring of those apparent boundaries for the purpose of promoting sympathetic identification and understanding among people who share very different historical and linguistic backgrounds. This essay should be no less than three, and no more than five, double-spaced pages in length. This means you have to get right to the point. It must include relevant references to no less than three credible academic sources in addition to whatever might be useful from the basic reading assignments for the course. A couple of students in previous years have given permission for their essays to be made available as examples. These are in a Canvas folder under your “files” link. A hard copy of your writing is to be turned in at the beginning of class on the date listed on the schedule below. For the purposes of this exercise electronic submissions are not acceptable. A hard copy must be submitted in class. 2 sample papers and one explanation of the 4 stages of life in attachment
