Re-writing “Pearls” Ending

do two( 2) pages with the directions that i am asking the assaigment red to be hand to me in 10 hours from now no more than that Part 1 Your task is to re-imagine and then re-write a new ending to “Pearls” (213). Let’s imagine that the final two chunks of the story (the final four paragraphs that begin on p219 with “And it arrives…”) didn’t exist in the original. You are to take on the narrator’s voice, his emotional state, his ideas about his relationship with Angela, to take on his writing style and make something happen to bring the story to a new and different conclusion than in the original. The challenge is to write it as close to the style of the narrator as you can, writing in the Professor’s voice. In four paragraphs, and a minimum of one full page, imitate Cunningham’s structure and strategy: In your first paragraph, show us a scene where something or someone arrives at his door. You can even begin as he does: “And it arrives…” Maybe it is a different kind of object that she sends. Or maybe it’s not a package that arrives in the mail, but something different happens (a knock at his apartment door?). Maybe the ending takes place in a different location: in the classroom? maybe he encounters her on the street on his way to get a cup of coffee? maybe he mistakes another woman walking in the distance for her? The second paragraph should put us in his mind, should give us a movie of his mind like in the original. Look again at Cunningham’s writing to get a sense of what he might be thinking give this new ending you are imagining, and how Cunningham composes the internal voice of his male character. Finally, in the third paragraph offer some kind of action that stands in metaphorically for his emotional state as a way to end the story. Where the Professor wraps the string tightly around his ankle to the point of causing constant pain (that is a metaphor for what?), what would you have the Professor do instead as a metaphor for how you’d like the story to end? Part 2 In no less than one page, explain the decisions you made in your ending re-write. Why did you have the characters do what they do? How do their new actions grow out of the story that Cunningham wrote? Why did you choose certain words to convey an emotional state? How does your rewritten ending add to, or revise, or contradict Cunningham’s original ending? Explain each of the writing decisions you made.
