Search for Identity Identity is a character or a personality that distinguishes someone from the rest of the people. However during adolescence the some people may experience identity crisis. This identity crisis refers to failure by individuals to achieve ego identity during their adolescence stage. It occurs during the identity cohesion stage of psychological development where the adolescents deal with sexual maturity physical growth and combining ideas about themselves and what other people think about them. The struggle for identity is well brought up by a story of Nora in Henricks play jazz "he says. Sonny also shows some courage in making his judgment when he tells his brother that he will join the army just to get out of the Harlem. Earlier on when his brother questions him about smoking cigarettes he says "I just wanted to see if I'd have the courage to smoke in front of you".
