The former focuses on the organization and planning behavior of the leaders while the latter was more on the relationship between the leaders and the followers. Secondly, the University of Michigan studies were based on two other leadership behaviors; employee orientation and production orientation. The employee orientation focuses on the capacity of leaders to view employees as human beings and not just as numbers (Northouse 67). On the other hand, production orientation focuses on how leaders view employees as means to end. Thirdly, there were Blake and Mouton’s Managerial studies that explored two leadership behaviors; concern for production and concern for the people. The behavior approach encompasses the behavior of leaders in different situations. Even more, the approach extends beyond the personal traits of the leader to what leaders do and how they act.

Secondly, Nothouse (71) asserts that this approach of leadership has been largely favored by a number of studies starting from the Ohio State University studies to the Littrell Studies in 2013 which claim it is a significant indicator of leadership success. Finally, it focuses on the two core areas of leadership; task and relationship. The ability to strike a balance between these two factors strongly influences the effectiveness of the leader. This is evident considering that studies that have been done on the influence of culture on leadership reveal that different cultures have different preferences of leadership styles. Application of the Behavioral Approach of Leadership Ideally, the behavioral approach is suitable in ongoing leadership settings. This is attributed that all levels of leadership, leaders are engaged in task and leadership continually.
