He could not feel the magic and love that filled the air during the festive season as he hurried towards the train station. Time seemed not to be moving. His mind was consumed by regrets and the Christmas decorations illuminating the streets felt like piercings in his already torn soul. This night he had been walking down the streets of the Mission District in San Francisco a street whose crime rate could easily be mistaken for the Bronx River in New York. He had walked these streets for the last 19 years and every day it seemed that the conditions were getting worse despite numerous efforts to reform the area. Most politicians had promised life-changing improvements which up-to-date have remained to be just and he could not feel anything. “She is pretending ” he consoled himself as the thought of having killed his wife engulfed his mind. “No she cannot die right now…not on my hands…what have I done now…oh fuck…am a man I should not be scared…she is trying to fool you ” he thought. Luis’s heart began to beat faster. “Bitch wake up ” he shrieked as he slapped her face. Then the thought of having killed his wife became distinct. Luis rushed to the phone and dialed 911. Time seemed to have frozen and his world felt like it had overturned. He thought of the repercussions and rushed for his coat then ran outside. The emergency team did not hesitate and they were at Luis’s house within a few minutes. Surprisingly the wife had opened her eyes when the emergency team arrived; she had luckily experienced a mild concussion. [...]
