Interview with an Entrepreneur

STEP 1 – DESIGNING YOUR INTERVIEWING QUESTIONS Go through the Modules 1 – 5 and begin to design your learning by creating a list of questions from the modules that you would like to draw learning lessons from the entrepreneur. For instance, in Module 1, you would like their views on whether entrepreneurs are made or born. Topics on creativity in Module 4 may reveal whether the entrepreneur’s thinking outside the box always feels a little uncomfortable? What kind of work process do they have? Do they consider themselves creative? Your job is to deliberate, dig deep and find out lessons, lifehacks from the entrepreneur to answer what it is you believe can or should be done to help you become more entrepreneurial! Design your questions so that they may be unconventional, interesting and provoking but related to entrepreneurial topics to evoke interesting responses. However, there are some standard approaches for interview questions and to break the ice typically are in regards to: - The entrepreneur’s background such as their motives, time orientation, activities, risk, status, failure/mistakes, decisions, who serves, family history, education background, and relationships with others etc. STEP 2 – WRITING THE REPORT This is an evaluative report to appraise your insights of what you learned through this interview process. You are to critique and give meaning to the key learnings from the entrepreneur, however you must be critical in your analysis of how the theory may differ to the reality of the entrepreneur’s experiences. This report can be structured as follows: 1) Introduction: Ensure you address the aims of the report, outline any key definitions if necessary, how you went about carrying out the aims of the report and key learnings or recommendations. The craft of your work is limited to only 1500 words, so be concise. 2) Key Lessons: Appraise and give value to the hard work that you have gone through in eliciting learning lessons from the chosen entrepreneur. The key tip here is not to simply reproduce your interview answers as this does not give the reader an insight into your own educational journey. 3) Conclusion: Draw upon the lessons from the entrepreneur how you can become more entrepreneurial as a result of this task assessment. This final section of the report should address how the findings of the interview apply or are meaningful to you. 4) Appendix: Attach your interview questions in the Appendix with appropriate headings. Hints: ● Rather than ask what attributes to their successes, instead ask about when celebrating their business success, whether (if an Australian entrepreneur or one that operates in Australasia) the entrepreneur feels the pressure to cloak their wealth or success from a, ‘tall poppy syndrome’ phenomenon? ● The sky's the limit in choosing your entrepreneur. Is Sir Richard Branson adventurer Entrepreneur in town? Perhaps there’s an unconventional entrepreneur you’ve always been curious about? Who inspires you? What lessons could you relish to learn from a Specialist Entrepreneur? A Social Entrepreneur? A serial Entrepreneur? Or a Senior-preneur? (Also, known as grey, older, Third Age, or elderly entrepreneurs). The ‘Monk Entrepreneur who sold his Ferrari’ may have caused a global sensation however, equally important lessons could be drawn from the local entrepreneur at the corner shop near you. ● Select and secure someone who is currently (in the past three years) starting a business, who owns at least 51% of the business and has paid wages to someone other him/herself. Ensure you allow at least 45 minutes and have the chosen entrepreneur commit to this timeframe. Record the date, place of interview, person’s name, the position held, and your relationship to the entrepreneur. ● In your conclusion, don’t forget to consider and reflect upon; what did you learn or discover that has meaning for your own plans, for your own future? ● This formal interview must be approached rigorously, not casually. You cannot underestimate the fact that you are interviewing a famous public figure, a successful leader or reputable manager who as such, needs to be treated respectfully. Do your homework. Vital questions should be organized in advance (and sometimes are requested to be sent prior to the interview). Put your best professional foot forward and rehearse them with a friend in a mock interview. ● Develop an efficient means of taking notes or capturing the key points of the entrepreneur. Keep the right balance between professional and friendly attitude. Tone should be amicable but speech needs to be elegant and courteous. Establish a personal rapport, go the extra mile (a token gift of appreciation or take the entrepreneur out to lunch!). ● The success to your learning at the interview is to probe, to ask why, to delve beneath the surface. This in turn will provide the foundation for you to produce an insightful evaluation of what you learned through this exercise and how theory may differ to the reality of the entrepreneur’s experiences. ● To simply produce a massaged reproduction of the interview would not meet the assessment criteria standards. ● Submit the report in a .doc or .docx format only
