extra credit

This week some of the readings are on neighborhoods and health. You may have heard of the term food desert before. This is generally defined as a neighborhood without access to fresh and healthy food, whether rural or urban. A lot of public policy is currently focused on fixing the problem of food deserts by trying to get better, healthier food to people without access. In particular, First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign has an entire component related to food deserts. Watch her video here: http://www.letsmove.gov/healthy-communities Next, read this article published by Slate that summarizes recent research on the effects of food deserts on health: http://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2014/02/food_deserts_and_fresh_food_access_aren_t_the_problem_poverty_not_obesity.html Now, imagine that Michelle Obama has invited you to be on an advisory council for her Let’s Move campaign. In particular, she wants your advice on food deserts and neighborhood health inequality. For this extra credit assignment, prepare a briefing for the White House on what you think about food deserts and health. Specifically answer the following questions: What is current research saying about food deserts? Does getting healthy food into poor neighborhoods improve the health of residents? Summarize the findings. Based off of our readings for this week (and the research summarized in the Slate article), what do you think is the main cause of health problems poor neighborhoods? If your answer is not food deserts, why do you think current policy focuses on food access? How would you recommend to shift policy in a more effective direction?
