It conducts an in-depth analysis of the various aspects of the tax system. It identifies the complexities within the system as reported by a majority of the Americans. These complexities are narrowed down into two reasons, which are, that Americans do a great deal of social policy through “tax expenditures” and that the tax system taxes households in place of individuals (Sides). Nonetheless, the article makes an interesting discovery that despite the tax system being complex, the Americans are proud to pay taxes anyway. In essence, “tax expenditures” are government spendings that are delivered through a tax code. One of the cannons of taxation is that a tax system ought to be simple. In this case, challenges arise with regards to the calibration of withholding and actual taxes owed where the tax system focuses on households rather than individuals.
