Student’s Name Instructor’s Name Course Due Date Theater dramaturgy research paper Introduction The play Topdog/ Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks is a catastrophic play that revolves around two African-American brothers who are struggling economically to make ends meet after the breakup of their parents and abandonment. Abandoned at the age of 16 and 11 Lincoln and Booth are now in their thirties and they have to learn how to survive provide and sustain themselves through hustling. Lincoln the older brother now nicknamed Link works as an Abraham Lincoln impersonator at the arcade after giving up with the three card monte when his close partner is shot dead while his brother booth is jobless but supports himself by petty shoplifting and also he wants to play the three card monte “you-pick-that-card-you-pick-uh-loser” (Parks 23). Despite being an inexperienced player in the 3-card monte Booth takes pride for playing the three card monte of Lincoln’s work of impersonating Abraham Lincoln there is a certain level of deception and dishonesty in it. For instance the management exemplifies this dishonesty when they instruct Lincoln to wear a Whiteface when going to work such that he can act more of Abraham Lincoln. Lastly in Suzan’s perspective by taking the example that Lincoln loses his life after returning to his first hustling it is evident that there is a dominant aspect of a person’s character that is inexorable. In other words, if the play was written in 1975, include information about the period of 1975. This information is basically similar to the kind of information you included in your period papers. If the play was written in 2007, include information about events that were occurring in 2007. 4. Historical information about the era of the play and the period that play portrays. For example, if the play was written in 1975, but portrays the 1930s, than information about life in the 1930s must also be included in your paper, in addition to the 1975 information discussed above in item #3. 5.
