Religion - FIeldwork Final , Term paper

Your fieldwork consists of the following: * A visit to one specific religious community and conversations/interviews with two people in that community. * Reflections and analysis resulting in a written paper (about 4-5 pages) analyzing your field work experience. How to pick the 'right' religion and the best possible setting In choosing your fieldwork site, you need to consider the following criteria: * IT HAS TO BE DIFFERENT FROM YOU You may NOT observe a religion in which you were raised, a religion that you have practiced or currently practice, or a religion with which your family is in direct connections. That means: try to find a religious context that is pretty much totally unfamiliar to you. You will learn more and expand your knowledge. * IT HAS TO BE ACCESSIBLE Pick a religious group or community that is geographically accessible to you, i.e. choose a site that is located in the area is in which you live and which you can visit without too much hassle. You may want to coordinate this with a fellow student if you wish to work and conduct your fieldwork with another class member. What to do * First, get some background info: You must find out about the religion and the specific congregation or group prior to your initial visit. In fact, it makes sense to read up on some basic info prior to submitting your proposal/plan. Read the chapter in How to Be A Perfect Stranger (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.(if there is a chapter) or other reference book for background and do a little additional research on the web. See if you can find additional material published by the group in order to get a sense of their activities and structure. This will also be helpful in identifying two members to interview. Determine what your particular questions and you specific interests are in your fieldwork project. * Second, identify a setting to visit and set up two interviews: You want to determine a specific settings/events/meetings that you will visit. Make sure you can go at that time and make sure that you are allowed to attend. Before or during that visit, you also need to set up two interviews. -> About the visit: It is easiest to call whatever functions as 'main office'. I know that it might seem strange to call a stranger to ask if it is ok to come and visit their religious service or a specific ritual, but please know that people in religious groups get these calls all the time. Just be clear what you want from them, that it is in the context of a class at UCF, and they will probably let you know if it is ok to come and if there is anything in particular you need to be aware of, like clothing or specific seating arrangements or ritual aspects which are limited to sub‑groups or specific members only. (It is a good idea to read ahead AND to ask in order to make sure you know all the aspects of decorum you should be aware of.) Another reason why I encourage you to call in advance is that it is likely that people will appreciate your interest in their religion or group and might want to show you around or help you in setting up the two interviews. Take this as an opportunity to get more information for your project. Try to resist the urge to 'sneak' in and get out of there before anyone has noticed a 'stranger'. Sure, you may have to get up and introduce yourself, but remember, you are there to observe and learn something. If people know why you are there they might come and tell you thing that might prove useful. You don't need to believe what they believe ‑ and in fact it would be wrong to argue about it in this context. You are observing and trying to learn specific things about this group and their religious practice or organization. -> About the interviews: You want two people ‑ best if they are two people who know about different aspects of the group. Don't think of "interview" in very formal ways. You should have a few specific questions and issues you want to get at (drawn from your prior research or observations in the visit to service, for example), but go with the flow of the conversation. It may be easier to have a pretty normal and interesting conversation if you think of this ‑ and if the interview partner thinks of it‑ as a "conversation" or as "you having a few questions the other person can help you with" instead of a formal "interview" * Third, document and analyze your fieldwork data : Make sure that you -> document your conversation and thoughts about the interview. Don't be shy to ask if you could tape your conversation, but be aware that your interview partner may not want you to record her/him. Be prepared by bringing some paper and a pencil in order to note a few significant sentences and information immediately following your conversation. (If you can't tape ‑ and for the visits to services or other group meetings ‑ plan on going to a quiet place like a coffee shop immediately after you get out of your fieldwork setting and write down your observations while they are fresh on your mind. You may think you will remember everything in a few hours ‑ but you might not. Take good notes right away ‑ it will make the process of writing your report a lot easier!) -> analyze all your data. Once you have gathered all your information and have conducted your interviews, bring these different sources of information into a productive conversation with each other and with the scholarly information you have read (in our textbook and other material you use in preparation). * Fourth/Finally, write a report focused on your observations and analysis. Make sure to include information like physical address and contact phone number (please note that I may call the place to verify that it exists and you visited.) Describe your visit and what you learned. I don't need an exact transcript of your interviews. However, including some specifically interesting sentences or images you observed as these can usefully illustrate your arguments. What you are trying to show in your report is that you have chosen an interesting and relevant context in which to observe and that you asked useful questions in order to get to specific aspects of the religion under investigation. Try not to write universal declarations about the religion ‑ or about religion in general. You have observed one specific context with very particular questions in mind ‑ write about that. It is a small context, but that is precisely the strength of your report. Try to be specific and document your critical thinking about the many levels of complexity that you were able to observe. The paper you submit should be 4-5 pages, carefully proofread, with a proper title.
Your fieldwork consists of the following: * A visit to one specific religious community and conversations/interviews with two people in that community. * Reflections and analysis resulting in a written paper (about 4-5 pages) analyzing your field work experience.
