The function of education is explained in three theories namely; symbolic integrationists theory, functionalist theory, and the conflict theory. The functionalist theory portrays education as a tool that is used to serve the needs of the society in the ways that universal education serves the needs of society. Conflict theory views education as a way of maintaining social inequality in the community and ensuring those in the wealthy class remain powerful. The symbolic integrationists' theory focuses on how a teacher's attitude and expectations influence performance, attitudes, and perception of a learner. Purpose of education According to the functionalist theory, education helps in instill social control and important values. This helps teachers teach them in accordance with their ability. This prepares them for their future roles and professions since special attention is given to all kind of learners.

Cultural and social innovation is the fifth role of education. Our artist cannot come up with great works of poetry or art if they are not educated. Nevertheless, scientists cannot come up with great inventions if they do not have knowledge of the related subjects. This can be done through listening to the students and advising them appropriately. The teachers also provide career advice to their learners this is in accordance to the learners' ability. Self-reflection is a mechanism of digging deeper into your thoughts to find out reasons as to why you are doing something. It involves self-assessment and observation. This helps a teacher be able to improve the performance of the student through the use of appropriate teaching strategies.
