How clean my water is? (Example)

Water Activity Report Name Institution of Affiliation Date Comparison of the water samplesAfter taking the water samples from the lake borehole and the drainage ditch I learned that there are some significant differences in the quality of the water samples I obtained. The water from the lake on observing one could see some organisms which were living in it. They were a small developing organism was prevented from contamination and also it has precipitated while in its conservative storage in the hole. There is less soil absorption due to that it is built on rock walls. The water from the drainage pit was the dirtiest. This is because water from the drainage was a mixture of different decomposing components which made the water and hub for bacteria leading to decomposing. [...]

Order Description:

This activity is most suited for those of you who have interest in chemistry or biology, and who likes to make some of your own simple testing equipment. The goal is to compare three different local sources of water. I suggest using water from a lake (medium to large size), a small pond/waterhole, and a drainage ditch or some other such intermittent local source. Collect water in gallon-size jugs first. When you collect the water in the field notice if there is any life detectable in water (without a microscope) and if your wSeater has any smell or color. Do not drink the water!! Let some of that water sit on a window sill somewhere (where there is light) in an open container (say, a quart-sized glass jar - you will need three such jar). Check after three days. Do you see any precipitate (dirt) at the bottom of each jar? Do you see any evidence that there is some bacterial activity in each jar (e.g., some smell of hydrogen sulfide or any foaming, etc.)? Is there a difference among the three water samples? Which one seems the cleanest? Which one is the dirtiest? Why do you think this is the case? Explain in your report. You can attempt to make a simple turbidity kit as described here: www.aqsolutions.org This handout further describes how one can measure the amount of dissolved iron and presence of bacteria. See what you can do and discuss what you find out in your report.
