Critical Analysis One

write a three-to-four page essay in which you respond to ONE of the three prompts listed below: 1.)In questioning the value of literary realism, Flannery O'Connor has written, "I am interested in making a good case for distortion because I am coming to believe that it is the only way to make people see." Write an essay in which you "make a good case for distortion," as distinct from literary realism. In other words, analyze how important elements of the work you choose are "distorted" and explain how these distortions contribute to the effectiveness of the work. Avoid plot summary. 2.) The eighteenth-century British novelist Laurence Sterne wrote, "No body, but he who has felt it, can conceive what a plaguing thing it is to have a man's mind torn asunder by two projects of equal strength, both obstinately pulling in a contrary direction at the same time." From the short story, choose a character (not necessarily the main character/protagonist) whose mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences. Then, in a well-organized essay, identify each of the two conflicting forces and explain how this conflict within the one character illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole. 3.) Choose any character in the short story and write an essay in which you (a) briefly describe the standards of the fictional society in which the character exists and (b) show how the character is affected by and responds to those standards. In your essay do not merely summarize the plot. Your essay should be a minimum of three-to-four pages long. Write the essay in present tense unless you are referring to an historical event. Write the essay in third person. In the opening paragraph, be sure to identify the story’s title (within quotation marks), its author and give a one two to sentence overview of the story. You must have a thesis statement that sums up the contents of the paper. Assume you are writing to an audience that has already read the story. Your goal is to persuade your audience to interpret the story as you do. Make sure your essay does not turn out to be simply a summary of the story. It must be persuasive, containing an argument with evidence. You must include evidence from the story to substantiate your main point. You must point your readers to specific passages of the story and include quotes from the story. Embed in-text citations and smoothly blend quotes into the text of your essay. Do not have floating quotes. (I will provide you more on this later.) Include a Works Cited page, which will contain just the one story you are analyzing. (I will provide you more on this later.) Do not editorialize, that is, preach to your readers as to how things should be. The essay should focus strictly on the story. If you are unsure what I mean here, let me know. Do NOT include personal experience or allude to real life events. Analyze the story according to the prompt you choose, relying solely on the happenings of the story. If you are unsure what I mean here, let me know. Do not forget to add a title to your essay. The title should reflect the main message of the paper. Your title should not be “Essay One” or “Literary Analysis” or anything of similar to this. Format your essay according to MLA style guidelines. It must be set in the standard 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced. (I will provide you more on this later.) It is due no later than the end of Sunday, June 12
