Therefore, failure of different projects of innovation in organizations is attributed to ineffective styles of leadership. The relationship between innovation and leadership is extensive to be discussed in a single topic. Therefore the research paper will focus on different styles of leadership based on innovation management. The reason for concentrating on forms of leadership is because they represent comprehensive and different lines of thinking. There are various styles of leadership adopted by organizations, but the research paper focuses on the ones that have already established a significant connection with the management of innovation. Different people have conceptualized innovation differently because of various specifications of transformation regarding substance and impact. The two parameters-leadership and innovation-are very wide to address, the research paper focuses on determining the leadership influence on innovative practices.

Directive and participative/democratic leadership The 2013 research by Lornikova et al. assumes that “directive leadership is associated with a leader’s positional power and is characterized by behaviors aimed at actively structuring subordinates’ work by providing clear directions and expectations regarding compliance with instructions” (Lorinkova et al. , 2012 pg. The Genentech Company was founded by Robert and Herbert to help in discovering and developing restriction enzymes that result in the production of biological drugs. There exists a link between the charismatic and transformational style as described by different researchers who believe that innovations call for a firm charismatic leadership which corresponds with entrepreneurship concepts. Howard Schultz adopts transformational leadership in Starbucks whose qualities qualify him to be a transformational leader. During his early expansion in the company, Howard transformed a new plan for the company and continued bringing in other things that benefited both workers and the business. According to Burns, “Transformational leaders form a relationship of mutual stimulation and elevation that converts followers into leaders and may convert leaders into moral agents.

" Howard motivated employees in Starbucks to perform well because of his passion, qualities of mobilizing people and vision he had for the company. For instance, a study by Bossink in 2004 discovered that most of the innovation failures are attributed to the inability of a leader to gather professional data as well as take part in knowledge networking. According to Bossink, “a charismatic leader was not able to absorb useful information and knowledge during the project” (Bossink, 2007 pg. Steve Jobs portrayed charisma as a leader in Apple Company during when it was undergoing a lot of financial crises. He co-founded the company together with a colleague in his garage during 1976. His charisma has bailed the company out of economic turmoil, effected positive changes and even convinced its staff to work for 90 hours in a week to achieve the seemingly unrealistic objectives in the company.

His ability to develop and retain mighty charismatic image with the employees was attributed salesperson’s enthusiasm for the company brand. He innovated a new style of leadership through revolutionary vision leveraging to map the company in the competitive world by coming with realistic, innovative practices. Transactional leadership Transactional leadership comes from the word ‘transaction,’ and it is defined as “an instance or process of transacting something. ” According to Burns and Bass, this form of leadership is described as a form of transaction among individuals. It can be assumed that transactional leadership refers to resource transaction between the leaders and staff members. The precise planning by such leaders ensures corporate goals are met through innovative practices. Although employees felt that Microsoft Company was a stressful environment because Bill Gates was firm on his leadership, the firm developed at a faster rate, and it revolutionized information technology, something that made it a significant trendsetter in the contemporary world.

Conclusion The research has proved that transformational leadership is not the only style that can result in innovative practices in an organization. Some of the leadership styles discussed that some of the successful companies had adopted support innovation management such as transactional, charismatic, directive, democratic and participative.
