literature Review (Criminology Research Methods)

CCJ 4700: Introduction to Research Methods in Criminology Summer 2016: Assignment 3 - Literature Review The purpose of this assignment is to conduct a review of the research literature in a particular area of criminology and criminal justice. You first will need to identify an outcome that is typically studied in criminology and criminal justice (e.g., crime, delinquency, drug use, sentence length, etc.). Second, choose two independent variables that are commonly used to explain variation in the outcome you have chosen. You may come up with these variables on your own, theymaycomefromareviewofpriorliterature, ortheymaybetheorydriven. Third, foreach independent variable you choose, find at least three studies that have examined the relationship between that variable and the outcome you are interested in studying. Each of these studies must be from peer-reviewed academic journals. Book chapters, editorials, news articles, reviews, etc. do not count towards your six studies. Last, you will write a paper that reviews the relationship between your selected independent variables and your dependent variable. This assignment is due June 8 at 9:00 a.m. in class and on Blackboard. You must turn in one hard copy and one electronic copy. Hard copies will only be accepted in class and electronic copies will only be accepted through Blackboard. Paper Content Include each of the following sections (with headings) in your paper. 1. Title page. The title page should include only the following information (a) a title for your paper, (b) your name, (c) course name and number, and (d) date of submission. 2. Introduction. In this section, introduce your topic. Specifically, in this section do the following: (a) introduce your research question(s) and topic, (b) provide a rationale for studying this particular topic, (c) identify the independent variables you selected, (d) identify the dependent variable you selected, and (e) explain why it is expected that there may be relationship between the selected independent variables and the selected dependent variable. In this section, you also may choose to give some background information, including relevant statistics, history, and theoretical background on your topic. 3. Literature Review. In this section, summarize each study that you have obtained from a peer- reviewed academic journal. Specifically, this section should include for each study (a) a brief description of the study. It also should answer the following questions for each study: (b) how was the independent variable measured, (c) how was the dependent variable measured, (d) what was the unit of analysis, and (e) what were the study’s findings as they relate to your research question and relationship of interest. 4. Conclusion. In this section, determine what the literature says about the relationship between your independent variables and dependent variable. This section should include answers to the following questions: (a) for each independent variable-dependent variable relationship, what are the overarching conclusions of the literature review (not of one particular study, but of the studies together) and (b) explain whether they empirical findings identified the relationship you expected to find between these variables. 5. References. The reference list should be on its own page. At a minimum, you should have six references (one for each of your studies). If you include other facts or information, cite that information in the text and include a reference in the reference list. Assignment Requirements The paper must be between 4-5 pages. The title page and reference page do not count towards the 4-5 pages. The paper must adhere to the following formatting guidelines: (a) double spaced text, (b) page numbers on each page excluding the title page, (c) 12 point Times New Roman font, (d) headings for each of the sections described under “paper content” above excluding the title page, (e) bind the hard copy paper with a staple, (f) use citations where necessary within the text of the paper, (g) use correct spelling and grammar and remove all typographical errors, and (h) remove all unclear or inaccurate statements or information. Your grade for this assignment will be based on the paper’s content, including providing accurate information and addressing each of the points described under “paper content,” and your demonstration of professional writing skills, including formatting your paper in adherence to the above guidelines and writing clearly and precisely. This assignment is worth 50 points of your final grade. Please also review the “citation guidelines” and “finding articles” documents.
