3 million people behind bars in the U. S. However, to note is the high number of people locked up in jails in specific neighborhoods. Prison State takes a keen look at the cycle of incarceration in America and through Kentucky, proposes strategies to reverse the trend in the states. The film is a testament to the plight of prisoners across the US. The film shows how wrong the justice system has become. There is over focus in locking up people in the US instead of creating reforms and helping them shape their behavior. As proven, jails do not help but cause more problems. The US judicial system has not realized that the explosion of inmates requires billions of dollars of taxpayers’ money.

Instead of investing billions in incarcerating people, the US government and respective states should look for ways to reduce unruly behavior in the community. Numerous times a girl testifies all her family members have been jailed for various offenses. The justice system looks at the prison as the prime solution for offenders. Hence, people are incarcerated for weak offenses like truancy. The result is broken families and poverty. The Kentucky state department and other states across America should reverse the trend. However, the majority of the victims in the state penitentiary are African-Americans. The film throughout gives narratives of communities left deserted with many members incarcerated. A close analysis shows such neighborhoods are black dominated. It is a problem of racial injustices against the African-Americans.
