This paper will focus on two characters, Sarty and Abner to compare and contrast their traits, tendencies, conflicts and the choices they make in life. Both Sarty and Abner belong to the Snopes family. They fight with the social structure and class structure which agonize them. Sarty and Abner come from low-economic families driven by poverty and related economic injustices in their society. While both characters believe that the injustices in their society suppress them to inferiority, their different traits, tendencies, and conflicts lead them to different choices. For instance, during Abner’s first trial when he is freed and banished, Sarty fights with the boys who hurl insults at Abner and immediately admits that his father’s character is flawed (Faulkner, 1977).
