ANALYSIS OF THE STAGE SISTERS. STUDENT’S NAME INSTITUTIONAL AFFILIATION Analysis of the stage sisters. Set in the period between 1935 and 1950 the stage sisters is a drama film of Chinese origin that narrates the stories of two Shaoxing opera practitioners who were in the same troupe but end up taking very different life paths. The movie first aired in 1964 a production of Shanghai Tianma film studio. The film stands out as unique as it was made out of an original screenplay as most movies made during its time were adaptations of other famous literary works. PLOT The film commences with Chunhua who had recently lost her husband running away from her Japanese occupation. Shanghai was seen as the most appropriate to depict the lives of the stage sisters as it was a symbol of luxurious decadence. Locally the film was well received and approved but was immensely criticized internationally at the Cultural Revolution for showing and giving a pass on bourgeois culture. However the stage sisters eventually rose to win international prizes such as the Sutherland trophy in 1980 at the British film institute awards. Works Cited. Dao-xin L. I. (2009).
