Student Instructor Course Date A Critical Analysis of Edward Abby’s Chapter 13 – Water The plot opens with Abby talking with a tourist from Cleveland Ohio. The tourist seems to think that the dessert would be a better place if it had water; to which Abby counter by saying the desert is good the way it is. Otherwise if it had water there would be settlement like Utah or agriculture like New Jersey. He then went on to describe the secret sources of water only known to the habitats of the desert. He asserted that if man was to settle there he will learn how to find water in the vast dry land. He noted that one may or may not find water in the dessert; the best solution is to carry some water at least a gallon a day. He advises against surface water blood or urine in life until the next precipitation. Abby Edwards has a unique writing style. He avoids the conventional writing with numerous characters and uses natural settings where he describes nature in its form. He uses metaphors to address environmental issues and as well other life challenges. In this chapter he uses the notion of water to highlight the misconceptions that people have about scarcity and as well the presence. He held a different opinion contrary to the popular believe that deserts lacks water. Instead he opines that there is just the right amount for such an eco-system. In essence he is using this metaphor to stress on the needs for balancing act and ensuring that we do not over exploit the natural resources. He is able to capture the ecosystem at the micro-level and as well at the macro-level. Works Cited Abbey E. Desert solitaire: A season in the wilderness. Ballantine 1998. [...]
