These are two different identities and he finds it hard to juggle between the two characters. I chose this movie because I have always been attracted to the way it is portrayed and the themes in It which are aimed at passing an important message to the society. Introduction The mental disorder Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is common as a manifestation of at least two separate identities that can take control of one's behavior (Butcher, Mineka, and Hooley, 2014). An illness such as Dissociative Identity Disorder is not bound by culture, religion, gender, ethnicities, or socioeconomic statuses; it is a disorder that can affect any individual at any time without a warning. It is the goal of this paper to discuss the aspects of Dissociative Identity Disorder such as the characteristics, treatments, and interventions involved, as well as portrayed in the movie Power using the character Ghost as well as providing research analysis of dissociative disorders for one to have a better understanding regarding this illness and how one might suffer from its symptoms.

Characterization of Dissociative Identity Disorder The National Alliance on Mental Illness states that dissociative disorders can be distinguished by one experiencing an 'involuntary escape' from his or her reality (Mueller-Pfeiffer et al. , 2013) this is the same case as Ghost’s when he tries to escape from being a family man and concentrates more on his club business and drug deals. He is detached from his thoughts, cognizance, memory bank, identity, respect, recognition, and remembrance. No one individual is immune to developing this disorder. According to the DSM-5 and the American Psychiatric Association, one must meet specific diagnostic criteria to be diagnosed with DID, (Mueller-Pfeiffer et al. There are those who believe that the disorder relates to the increased amount of sexual abuse in females, allowing the brain to cope with the tremendous amount of stress by separating the feelings, thoughts, and memories that are related to the traumatic events thus allowing the individuals conscious awareness to become unbalanced (Huntjens et al. Depersonalization and derealization are characterized by feeling a loss of reality and has been described as someone watching themselves as if he or she were in a movie this is exactly what Ghost is suffering from. He is detached and he even experiences physical symptoms like loss of balance. Ghost suffers is not able to connect emotionally to with people who are close to him. He loves his family especially his kids but at the same time, he does not have enough time to spend with them. Hypnotherapy Research has indicated that hypnosis has been the most successful treatment intervention for the dissociative disorder, including dissociative identity disorder. Because people with dissociative disorders typically experience them due to some sort of trauma or abuse, simply teaching them relaxation coping strategies do not work. The reason is that many of them were told to calm down or relax by their abusers and the words alone act as triggers. As a result, the relaxed state needs to be induced by hypnosis instead of taught. However, it is the collaborative effort between the patient and clinician that enhances the treatment approach ( Lenz, Del Conte, Hollenbaugh, &Callendar, 2016). This is the best therapy which can be applied to Ghost’s case. Conclusion In conclusion, Ghost is a perfect example of an individual suffering from DID.
