SWITCHING PERSPECTIVES SCENES

You will explore the possibilities of point-of-view by writing the same scene from two different perspectives. Each scene should be 500–1000 words long. First perspective: In either first-person or third person limited omniscience, write a scene (500–1000 words) where your character hears the sound of someone trying to break into the house. Your character is home alone (although it may not be his/her house), vulnerable in some way (for example, in the bath, or in bed, or trapped in a windowless room). The scene should begin with the first hint of danger and then follow what happens as the protagonist tries to figure out what to do about it. Then go on to show what happens when your character encounters the intruder (show how the situation resolves). Your goal is to imagine in a convincing way your narrator's emotions and perceptions, and to raise suspense. Second perspective: In either first-person or third person limited, write the same scene (500–1000 words) from the perspective of the intruder. This might be a random break-in by a common burglar, or maybe the intruder's story is more complex. Possibly it is someone the person knows. Consider your intruder's expectations: Does he/she expect the home to be empty? If not, who does he think might be there? Consider whether or not your intruder knows (or thinks he knows) the occupant of the house. In this scene, the reader should identify with the intruder, and again your goal is to imagine in a convincing way your narrator's emotions and perceptions, and raise suspense. How does the scene that happens when they meet feel differently from this character's perspective?
