The policy that affects diabetes mellitus type I and II that will be discussed in detail is the effects of health insurance expansion on diagnosis of this chronic disease. This was a jointly funded state and federal health insurance platform for persons with low annual income. These persons with low income included those with federal level of poverty below 138%, or $11,607 for an individual and $23,850 for family of 4 in 2014 in the continental US (HealthCare. Gov, 2014). Researchers have concluded that Medicaid expansion in diagnosis of diabetes is workable and would reduce incidences of unknown diabetes and promoted identification of new diabetes cases in the society (Kaufman et al. Moreover, this policy can identify people with diabetes at an early diabetic stage and therefore, reduce the complications associated with disease. In order to promote early and effective diabetes identification, Medicaid expansion should be adopted as suggested in the ACA law. Expanding Medicaid will help the poor and low income population to access to medical assistance for diabetes and other chronic diseases, an approach that will save the country a lot of money at long last.
